Welcome!

Oct 27th is National Make a Differene Day Help locally

THe Hunger/Homeless Commission was chartered in 1992 by the City of Lowell to serve as an information clearinghouse for social service agencies in Lowell that serve the Hungry and Homeless poulation.

Once a month the Commissioners meet at City Hall to discuss critical issues around homelessness.

Most members are Executive Directors of pantries or shelters and they volunteer their time to attend meetings. This monthly cross-communication helps keep agencies up to date about changes in programs, funding and other resources in order that the hungry and homeless in our city can be better served.

The Hunger/Homeless Commission is funded through grants and private donations raised during Hunger/Homeless Awareness Week, the third week in October.

Funds raised by the commission are used to support emergency shelter in motels for individuals and families left suddenly homeless and not covered by any other part of the social service system.  This emergency safety net helps keep critically needy individuals have a roof over their heads until they can be helped by existing social services.

Each year there are dozens of individuals and families left homeless due to fire, flood or other sudden circumstances.  During the flood of 2006 the H/HC provided motel shelter for many families as we have done for more than 14 years for fire, flood and other homeless clients.

In 2006 the Commission  helped to launch  the Wish Project a furniture and baby goods bank that now serves more than 17,000 clients per year in the Merrimcak Vally.

Great ideas come out of communication.  All meetings are open to the public. If you are interested in attending please contact us.
